Strange and Wonderful Performance, Co-created by Anne Sherwood Pundyk and cellist, composer Mariel Roberts.
May 5, 2024
The closing event Anne’s solo exhibition, “Beauty Out of Bounds,” is a performance called “Strange and Wonderful.” It is collaborative work by Anne and the cellist and composer Mariel Roberts. Produced by The Rites of Spring Music Festival, this is the third installment of its annual “Sounds of Images” series. Based on Anne’s artist’s book “The Garden,” about family loss and acceptance, the piece intertwines women’s voices reading stories from the book with Roberts’ electronic and acoustic improvisations on cello. Anne’s large, colorful abstract unstretched canvas paintings form the backdrop for the performance in East End Arts’ 11 West Gallery. Staged as an immersive, theatre-in-the-round experience, Mariel and the readers will move and encircle the audience throughout the one-hour performance. The chorus of women readers include Cynthia Cannell, Andrea Cote, Lucy Cutler, Vivian Garcia-Tunon, Laura Held, Dipti Salopek, Suzette Delia Reiss, Phoebe Pundyk, and Anne Sherwood Pundyk
