North Fork Painter Connects Abstraction to Activism
Anne Sherwood Pundyk joins “eARTh” Exhibition at Southampton Arts Center"
Two new, large abstract paintings on unstretched canvas by Anne Sherwood Pundyk are presented this month in “eARTh – Artists as Activists,” a group exhibition curated by Amy Kirwin. The exhibition features artists who use their art to creatively confront climate change; urging the audience to ask questions and inspiring them to take action. “My approach of searching and uncovering in my painting models the sparking of agency balanced by research I use in my grass-roots environmental organizing,” observes Pundyk. The artist builds her mercurial works from the inside out stitching together swaths of stained canvas. These form her fields-of-play where poured liquid color transitions to ordered, interlinked painted rings.
The East End landscape, with its ever-changing meadows, wetlands, fields, forests and waterways shapes the artist’s imagination. In her imagery, the dynamic of her interlocking circles evokes the intricate, interconnected ecosystems each with their own diverse interdependent forms of life. Similarly they reinforce the interconnectedness of our human communities. Her environmental activism is currently focused on saving Mattituck Inlet on the Forth fork from the potentially negative impacts of over development.
Pundyk has been invited by exhibition partner, Peconic Land Trust, to discuss her work as part of a panel discussion via zoom, “The Artists’ View – Contrasting Expressions of Nature” on June 16th, 6 – 7 pm. More information here.
